Custom Typing Test: Use Your Own Text
Paste anything — the test runs on your text, times you with a stopwatch, and scores you when you finish it.
Practice the typing you actually do
Generic tests measure you on generic text. But most typing friction is personal: the same product name you fumble every time, the greeting you type forty times a day, the vocabulary of your field. The custom test turns any of it into a scored, timed drill with the same engine, caret, and stats as the rest of TypeTimer.
It is also the honest way to test yourself on difficulty levels the standard test avoids. Paste something dense and technical and watch what happens to your WPM — then drill it until the gap closes. Since the test ends when the text ends, short focused reps are easy: paste one tricky paragraph and run it five times.
Private by architecture
Everything on this page happens inside your browser tab. Your pasted text is never sent to a server, and your results are stored only in your device's localStorage, like every other TypeTimer test. When you want a comparable benchmark number instead of practice, switch to the 3 minute test — and if you're curious why your custom-text scores differ from standard tests, the blog explains why WPM varies with the text you type.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my pasted text uploaded anywhere?
- No. The text goes straight from the paste box into the test running in your browser tab. There is no server involved, no storage, and no analytics on the content — close the tab and it is gone.
- How is a custom test scored?
- The same math as every other TypeTimer test: a stopwatch runs from your first keystroke until you finish the text, then WPM is computed at 5 characters per word, with accuracy, consistency, and the per-second graph. Because the timer adapts to the text, any length from a sentence to several paragraphs works.
- What kind of text should I practice with?
- The text you actually mistype. Common choices: email phrases you write daily, industry terminology, names and product words autocorrect always fights, or study notes you want to internalize. Repetition on your own material transfers to real work faster than generic drills.
- Can I practice code or technical text?
- Yes, with a caveat: the test treats any whitespace as a single space, so indented code loses its formatting. Symbol-heavy snippets, commands, and technical vocabulary work well; whole source files are better practiced in an editor.
- Why are some characters changed after I paste?
- Curly quotes, long dashes, and ellipsis characters get converted to their plain keyboard equivalents (straight quotes, hyphens, three dots) so every character in the test is something your keyboard can actually produce. Characters with no keyboard equivalent are removed.
- Is there a length limit?
- Custom tests cap at 2,000 words, which is far more than a practice session needs. Below that, any length is fine — a five-word minimum keeps the stats meaningful.
