Typing Timer — Free Typing Speed Test
Just start typing — the timer starts on your first keystroke. Press Tab any time for a fresh test.
Text to type:
A typing timer that respects your time
TypeTimer is a free typing speed test built around one idea: the test itself should be excellent. No start button, no interstitials, no account wall. The page loads, the text is focused, and the countdown ring starts the moment you press your first key.
You type over real sentences by default — original prose, not disconnected word salad — because that is closer to the typing you actually do all day. Prefer the drill-style feel of common words? Flip the source toggle. Want punctuation and numbers in the mix? Toggle those too. Every result shows net and gross WPM, accuracy, consistency, characters per minute, and a graph of your speed over the whole test.
Built-in progress tracking, no account
Every test you finish is saved to your device — never to a server. Come back tomorrow and your personal best, your last-ten average, and your trend chart are waiting. It is the useful part of an account with none of the sign-up.
When you are ready for more than a quick check, try the 5 minute test for a more stable reading, get a verified typing certificate to attach to a job application, or paste your own practice material into the custom text test. If you want to get faster, the blog has a practical 30-day plan for typing speed.
Frequently asked questions
- How does this typing test work?
- Type the text shown on screen. The countdown starts on your first keystroke and the test ends when the timer runs out. You get net WPM, gross WPM, accuracy, consistency, and a second-by-second speed graph. Press Tab to restart with new text instantly.
- What does WPM mean?
- WPM is words per minute. By convention a "word" is any 5 characters, including spaces — so typing 300 characters in one minute is 60 WPM. This standard makes results comparable whether the text uses short or long words.
- What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
- Gross WPM counts everything you typed divided by 5 per minute. Net WPM subtracts a one-word penalty per minute for each error you left uncorrected. Net WPM is the number employers and most tests mean when they say "typing speed".
- What is a good typing speed?
- Around 40 WPM is commonly cited as an average for everyday typists. 50 to 60 WPM is comfortable for most office work, and professional typists often work at 65 to 80 WPM or more. Accuracy matters as much as speed — 95%+ is a good target.
- Do I need an account to save results?
- No. TypeTimer stores your full test history, personal bests, and trend chart in your own browser (localStorage). Nothing is uploaded and there is nothing to sign up for.
- Do mistakes count against my score?
- Yes, in two ways. Every wrong keystroke lowers your accuracy percentage, even if you fix it. Errors you leave uncorrected also reduce your net WPM. Fixing a mistake costs a moment of speed but protects your net score.
