Average Typing Speed for Kids: WPM by Grade

The most widely used school guideline is simple: about 5 words per minute per grade level. A first grader around 5 WPM, a third grader around 15, a fifth grader around 25, an eighth grader around 40. That rule comes from published district and state keyboarding guidance, not from a measured national study of children, and it is a goal rather than an average. Accuracy targets ride alongside it, starting near 80 percent in the early grades and rising to roughly 90 percent by middle school. Anything more precise than that, especially a chart giving a single WPM number for each individual age, is almost always an interpolation of this same rule dressed up as data.
That last sentence is the useful part, and it is worth being blunt about it. If you have spent twenty minutes comparing kids' typing charts and come away confused, the confusion is real and it is not your fault. Most of those charts trace back to one rule of thumb, reshuffled.
What typing speed is typical by grade band?
Here is the clearest published version I can point you to. Boston Public Schools puts its recommended typing speed and accuracy on a public page for teachers, grade by grade, and states the underlying principle in one line: students should type at an average of 5 words per minute per grade level with accuracy between 80 and 95 percent. Grade 6 is filled in from the same 5 per grade rule the district states in its own opening line; every other row is published on that page as written.
The same rule shows up independently in state guidance. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction answers the question "How fast should kids type?" on its elementary keyboarding page with exactly this: keyboarding speeds should be measured as 5 words per minute times grade level, so a third grader has a goal of at least 15 words per minute.
Two things about this table matter more than the numbers themselves.
First, these are targets a district set for instruction. They are not the measured average of American children, because as far as I can find, no one has published that measurement. A target and an average are different things, and every chart that quietly swaps one for the other makes parents anxious for no reason.
Second, the accuracy column is doing real work and most charts drop it. A third grader typing 18 WPM at 70 percent accuracy is further behind than one typing 13 WPM at 92 percent, because the second child has the habit that will carry them and the first is building one they will have to undo. If you only copy one column from that table into your head, copy the accuracy one.
Where the per-age charts come from
You will see tables online giving a WPM figure for each individual age: 12 at eight years old, 20 at ten, 30 at twelve. Notice that those land almost exactly on the 5 per grade line, because that is where they came from. Someone took the grade rule, mapped grades onto typical ages, and printed the result as though a researcher had timed a sample of children. There is no study behind the decimal. I would rather tell you that than add another row to the pile.
Why can't young kids just practice their way to 60 WPM?
Because typing is a fine motor task before it is a knowledge task, and fine motor control is still developing through the elementary years alongside hand size, finger independence and reach across a keyboard built for adult hands.
The honest version of the research here is narrower than the confident claims you will read. There is a published study I can point to: Turner and colleagues tested 78 typically developing children aged 8 to 10 on a standardised measure of manual dexterity, then randomly assigned a subset to spend four weeks playing online typing games at home. The children who did the typing practice significantly improved their manual dexterity scores compared with the control group. A separate finger tapping task showed no group difference.
Read that carefully and notice what it does and does not say. It says that a short typing program measurably moved a standardised dexterity score in 8 to 10 year olds, which is a good argument for teaching typing early. It does not establish a hard WPM ceiling at any age, and I have not found a study that does.
So the practical answer is not "a nine year old physically cannot type 60 WPM." It is that the effort required climbs steeply, the practice volume needed is large, and the same hours spent on clean technique and accuracy produce a faster adult typist. Pushing a young child for raw speed usually buys a few WPM now in exchange for a hunt and peck habit later. That trade is a bad one.
Hand size is the part people underestimate. A child whose pinky cannot comfortably reach the shift key without rotating the whole hand is not going to hold correct finger placement under time pressure, no matter how motivated they are. When should kids start formal typing instruction?
The most defensible anchor is not a speed at all. The Common Core writing standards set the first explicit keyboarding expectation at fourth grade: students should demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting. Fifth grade raises it to two pages, sixth to three.
That is a volume standard, not a speed standard, and it is a smarter target than WPM for a child. "Can you get a page of your own writing onto the screen without giving up" is a real skill. "Can you hit 22 words per minute on a one minute drill" is a number.
Working backwards from a one page fourth grade expectation, most keyboarding curricula introduce the home row and correct hand position somewhere in second or third grade, with kindergarten and first grade spent on locating keys, using shift, and basic screen navigation rather than on speed. Published keyboarding scope and sequence documents from curriculum publishers follow the same shape.
Before roughly second grade, the return on formal instruction is low. Letter recognition, hand strength and handwriting are doing more for a six year old than drilling ASDF.
How should a parent or teacher measure WPM fairly?
Most of the panic I see comes from a bad measurement rather than a slow child. Here is the checklist I would use.
- Use the same test every time. Different tests count words differently and produce different numbers for the same typing. Comparing this week's result on one site with last month's on another tells you nothing. If you want the detail on why, we wrote up why your WPM differs on every typing test.
- Use a one minute test, not a five minute one. Young children lose concentration long before five minutes and the result measures stamina rather than speed. A 1-minute typing test is the right unit for a child.
- Check the text is age appropriate. A test that serves adult vocabulary will read as a reading test to a nine year old. If the child has to decode the words, you are measuring reading, not typing.
- Fit the hardware. A full size desktop keyboard, a chair at the right height, feet on the floor or a box, screen at eye level. A child hunched over a laptop on a sofa will test several WPM low and learn bad posture at the same time.
- Record accuracy next to speed, always. Write both numbers down. A rising WPM with falling accuracy is not progress.
- Take the best of three, and only on a calm day. First attempts are warm ups. A child who is tired or being watched anxiously will test below their real level.
- Compare the child to themselves. Month over month change on the same test is the only comparison that means anything. A cohort average you cannot verify is noise.
- Say the number out loud is not a grade. Children read a WPM figure as a score. Frame it as a stopwatch, the way you would time how long it takes to tie shoes.

What matters more than speed for students?
Four things, roughly in order.
Accuracy. Covered above, and it is first for a reason. Errors cost more than slow keys because every one of them gets fixed twice, once when the child notices and once when the teacher does.
Technique that does not need undoing. Correct finger placement is slower for the first several weeks and faster forever after. A child who learns to touch type at nine has thirty years of compounding ahead. A child who gets to 30 WPM with two fingers at nine has a habit to break at fourteen.
Not looking at the keyboard. This is the skill that turns typing from a task into a background process, and it is the one that frees attention for the actual writing. It is worth more than 10 WPM.
Sustained output. The Common Core page target again. Being able to sit and produce a page is the skill schools are actually asking for.

A ten year old is usually in fourth or fifth grade, which puts the published district goal at 20 to 25 WPM with accuracy around 85 to 90 percent. Treat that as a target, not a pass mark. Are typing games enough for kids?
Games are very good at the thing that is hardest with children, which is getting them to do enough repetitions to build muscle memory. What games are weak at is telling you whether the technique underneath is correct, because most of them reward hitting the right key by any means. The combination that works is games for volume and a plain timed test every few weeks to check that accuracy and finger placement are holding up. The study mentioned above used online typing games as its intervention, so this is not an argument against them.
How often should students test their speed?
Once a month is plenty for a child, and once a trimester is a common classroom rhythm. Weekly testing turns a measurement into a performance and invites the child to sacrifice accuracy for a better number. Practice can be daily in short bursts of ten or fifteen minutes. Testing should be rare enough that the child is not managing their score.
