How to Improve Typing Accuracy: Stop the Typos

To improve typing accuracy, stop treating typos as one problem. There are four distinct failures happening at your keyboard, and each has a different cause and a different fix: wrong characters you leave in (a finger-mapping problem), extra characters past the end of a word (a boundary problem), missed characters from spacing too early (a rhythm problem), and errors you catch and fix (a pace problem). Diagnose which one dominates your results, drill only that one, and hold a pace where you can stay above 98% for a full minute. The general advice to "slow down" works, but it works about four times faster when you know what you are slowing down for.

Why do fast typists make more errors than they think?

Two things hide errors from you while you type.

The first is that correction feels like success. You hit the wrong key, you notice it before the word ends, you backspace and fix it, and the sentence looks perfect. Nothing on screen says a mistake happened. But you spent keystrokes and, more expensively, a moment of attention that broke the flow of the next few words. The mistake is invisible in the finished text and completely visible in the clock.

The second is that speed and error blindness rise together. When you type at the top of your range, you are running ahead of your own verification. The largest published study of typing behaviour, Observations on Typing from 136 Million Keystrokes (Aalto University and the University of Cambridge, CHI 2018), clustered 168,000 volunteers into eight typist groups that differ in performance, accuracy, finger usage and keystroke overlap. One of those groups is described in the University of Cambridge write-up as "careless typists" who move their fingers quickly but have to correct many mistakes. Another group gets to the same speed while staying essentially error free. Both feel fast from the inside. Only one of them is.

The same research found that fast typists as a group make fewer errors, not more. So the fast-and-sloppy typist is not paying a fair price for speed. They are paying twice for a speed they do not actually have.

Here is what an error is worth in numbers. Net WPM subtracts one full word per minute for every uncorrected error, which is the standard formula explained in how WPM is calculated. At 60 gross WPM you produce 300 characters a minute, so one character takes about 0.2 seconds. A single uncorrected error costs you one word, which is five characters, which is a full second of output. Now compare that to deliberately slowing down. If you type three characters at half your normal pace, each takes 0.4 seconds instead of 0.2, and you lose 0.6 seconds total. One uncorrected error costs roughly 1.7 times what three deliberately careful characters cost. Ten uncorrected errors in a minute costs more than typing the entire minute noticeably slower.

That is the whole argument, and the Aalto researchers reached the same conclusion from their data: pay attention to errors, because they are costly to correct, and slowing down to avoid them makes you faster in the long run.

What are the four kinds of typing error?

TypeTimer's results screen already splits your characters four ways, in the line labelled correct / incorrect / extra / missed. Three of those are visible on the screen. The fourth you have to infer, and it is usually the biggest one.

Incorrect. You typed a character, it was wrong, and it was still wrong when the timer stopped. In modern typing these are mostly substitutions, one letter standing in for another. That is a genuine change from the typewriter era, where typists more often added or omitted characters instead. Substitution is now the dominant computer-keyboard error.

Extra. You typed characters beyond the end of the target word. Usually this is a doubled letter, or your fingers running the tail of a familiar word pattern that the actual text did not ask for. You meant to type "the" and your hand delivered "then", because "then" is the shape it types more often.

Missed. You pressed space before you finished the word, and the leftover characters are counted against you. This is a rhythm failure, not a finger failure. Your spacebar is firing on a beat instead of on a completed word.

Corrected but costly. These never appear in the character line, because you cleaned them up. They appear in your accuracy percentage instead. TypeTimer judges every keystroke at the moment you press it: a wrong key counts as a wrong key forever, even after you backspace and fix it. Backspaces themselves are not counted, and the retyped character is judged fresh. So a run where you fix everything gives you a clean character line and a mediocre accuracy number.

That gap is the diagnostic. If your character counts are near zero but your accuracy is 93%, you did not have a good run. You had a messy run with good cleanup, and cleanup is where your time went.

One detail worth knowing about how the score is built: the space that ends a word only counts as a correct keystroke if the word was exactly right when you pressed it. So a word you botched and left alone costs you the wrong character and the space after it. That is not a penalty invented to be harsh. It is the honest reading of what happened.

Which drill fixes each error type?

This is the part the generic tip lists skip. Same symptom, four different repairs.

If more than one row applies, take the one with the largest count first. Error types do not improve together, and splitting your attention across two of them means neither gets enough reps to change.

How slow should accuracy practice feel?

Slower than you expect, and for a specific reason: you are not practising typing, you are practising the pace at which your verification keeps up with your fingers. Type faster than that and every rep teaches the error.

The practical setting is 10 to 15 percent below your comfortable pace. If you normally sit at 60 WPM, aim for roughly 52 and hold it for a full minute without a single backspace. Not "few backspaces". None. When a full clean minute becomes routine, you have found your real controlled ceiling, and that number, not your best-ever score, is the one that improves.

It will feel like going backwards for about a week. The reason it works anyway is that error correction is not free time. A typist at 55 WPM and 98% accuracy delivers finished text faster than one at 70 WPM and 90%, because the second typist spends the difference on backspacing and on re-finding their place in the sentence.

Fifteen minutes a day is enough. Twenty minutes of frustrated practice at the wrong pace is worse than five good ones, because the reps are teaching the wrong thing.

When do you reintroduce speed?

Use one gate, and do not negotiate with it: three consecutive clean minutes at your training pace before you raise it. Clean means 98% or better with the character counts at zero.

When you clear that gate, raise the pace by about 5%, not more. Your accuracy will dip, which is expected. Hold the new pace until it comes back to 98%, then gate again. This is the same ladder behind the 30-day plan for typing faster and the route to 80 WPM, and it works because you never spend time typing at a pace you cannot control.

One thing worth adding once your accuracy is stable is keystroke overlap. The Aalto data found the fastest typists press the next key before releasing the previous one on 40 to 70 percent of keystrokes. You cannot force that. It emerges when your finger assignments are unambiguous enough that your hands stop waiting on each other. Accuracy work is what makes it possible, which is another way of saying accuracy is not the opposite of speed. It is the prerequisite.

Also useful from the same researchers: practise on new sentences rather than the same passage. Repeating one text trains that text, not typing.

How do you track accuracy honestly over a month?

Four rules, all of them there to stop you from measuring your best day instead of your typical one.

Test at the same time of day. Typing accuracy at 11pm is not the same skill as at 10am, and comparing across the two produces noise that looks like progress or decline.

Record the median of three runs, not the best. Your best run is your luck. Your median is your skill. This one change is the difference between a trend line you can act on and a scoreboard you can flatter.

Log four numbers, not one: accuracy, net WPM, the character line, and consistency. Accuracy alone hides whether you improved by making fewer mistakes or by correcting faster. Only the character line tells you which.

Test longer than a minute at least once a week. A one-minute test measures a sprint. Take a five minute test weekly and expect accuracy to fall by a point or two, because that decay is your real endurance number and it is the one an employer's test will find.

Expect the shape of improvement to be lumpy. Accuracy tends to move in steps, sitting flat for days and then jumping when a specific error pattern finally resolves. If four weeks pass with no movement at all, you are almost certainly drilling the wrong error type. Go back to your character line and pick the biggest number again.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing accuracy percentage?

Aim for 97% or better, and treat 98% as the target for practice runs. The reason 97% sounds lenient and is not: at 60 WPM you are producing roughly 300 keystrokes a minute, so 97% still means about nine wrong keys every minute. Below 95%, correction time eats so much of your output that working on accuracy will raise your effective speed faster than working on speed will. Note that these are TypeTimer's own accuracy thresholds for practice, not an official standard. Employer tests generally set a WPM floor rather than an accuracy floor, though many deduct for errors in a way that amounts to the same thing.

Does backspacing count against my WPM?

Not against net WPM, no. Net WPM only subtracts for errors that are still wrong when the timer stops, so a mistake you catch and fix does not trigger the one-word penalty. It does cost you in two other places. It counts permanently against your accuracy percentage, because the wrong key was pressed regardless of what happened afterwards. And it costs real seconds: the backspace, the retype, and the moment of attention spent noticing. Those seconds show up as lower gross WPM. Fixing your mistakes is still almost always worth it. Not making them is worth more.

Why is my accuracy worse on long tests?

Because sustained typing and sprint typing are different skills, and long tests measure the one you have practised less. Three things drift over five minutes: attention wanders from the upcoming text back to your hands, posture collapses and changes your finger angles, and micro-fatigue lengthens your recovery after each error so mistakes start clustering. A drop of one to two points from your one-minute accuracy is normal. A drop of five or more usually means the pace you can hold for a minute is not a pace you actually own yet. If a job requires a long test, practise at that length: California's state hiring rules, for example, require a five minute proctored typing certification at a minimum of 40 WPM, and a minute of sprint practice does not prepare you for it.

Should I fix typos mid-test or keep going?

Fix them, in almost every case. An uncorrected error costs a full word per minute off your net score, while the correction costs you a few tenths of a second plus the accuracy hit you already took when you pressed the wrong key. The arithmetic favours fixing. The exception is the doom spiral: if you have already backspaced twice into the same word and it is still wrong, abandon it, take the penalty, and get your rhythm back. Chasing one broken word usually costs more than the word is worth. And during accuracy practice specifically, do not let smooth correction become the goal. A run where you fixed nine mistakes is not a good run, no matter how clean the final text looks.
